    Ooooooow .. that sounds interesting.
Does that mean I can now play my old original games?
I recently bought a collectors edition which included X-wing, Tie-fighter and X-wing vs Tie fighter (Tie including the bonus crafts).
It installed fine but the Tie game claims I have no joystick conencted (is installed and calibrated in XP).

Strange, the game should recognise a DirectInput device as the joystick. I wonder if the patch allows you to play with a mouse.

This compatibility fix when installed will provide Windows 2000/XP with the compatibility settings required for these operating systems to run the X-Wing Collector Series and X-Wing Trilogy versions of X-Wing & TIE Fighter (Also known as X-Wing 95 & TIE Fighter 95) with Hardware 3D Graphics acceleration turned on. The fix also stops the TIE Fighter Launcher from asking you to install DirectX 5.2.
System Requirements of this Compatibility Fix
Operating System: Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or Higher or Windows XP
Windows 95/98/ME versions of X-Wing & TIE Fighter that were included in Star Wars X-Wing Collector Series & Star Wars X-Wing Trilogy,
Note 1: This fix does not work with the old versions of X-Wing & TIE Fighter as these were MS-DOS games not Windows games.
Note 2: Windows 2000 users need to have the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit installed which is available from
    HERE

    This?
    X-Wing & TIE Fighter?
Does it mean each individual game? As in TIE Fighter AND X-Wing, or Xwing vs TIE Fighter?
I've got the TIE Collectors edition, and I'd love to play that again...

    Yes, it works with that.
The only versions it doesn't work with are the DOS ones.

Cool, I never could get Tie Fighter to run under XP ( grrr DX 5.1 ).
We should try and get a big game of X Wing Alliance going - 'Stay on target Lutz'.

There is only the one XP patch. the other patch out there is mainly for fixing a few missions.

Can you play X-wing alliance over the net in mulitplayer?
    That would be very cool.
I'm a crap pilot but I'd love to be in big game with others.
As for Tie ... hmm I'll install this and see what happens.

Wouldn't think so, it's out on budget for less than a tenner.
I have a vision of me entering a game shop and buying it again, I've no idea where my copy has gone!

I will happily stop my WoW subscription for a month or maybe two if we could get regular weekday evening multiplayer games going on any of these games.

Khanivor - are you on Saitek's beta test team then or are you saying you get given one and just haven't had a chance to use it?

Is there any way to play these games on Win7?
I tried to install X-wing/Tie-fighter/ X-wing vs Tie fighter and X wing alliance last night.
The autorun menu appears but when you want to install there's an error.
'not 64 bit compatible, please contact your software publisher for a 64 bit version'.
    :-/
I then decided to install freespace2 for some space sim shenanigans but there's a small scratch on the install disc which means it gets stuck at 36% when installing.
Are any of these 'old games for download' sites offering it in some way that just works without fiddling?

Can you not run the install programme in compatibilty mode?

No help on the X-Wing front but GOG.com has both of the Freespace games for not very much money and FS2 certainly works on Win7 64 as long as you run it in XP compatibility mode.

There was no joy with compatibility mode. These are the win95 versions but setting it to win95 compatibility still brings up the 64bit error.
I'll check the toothpaste option first .... then GOG for freespace2. I got started on it once but it was a German version and it was doing my head in.

Salaman, you didn't happen to buy the German version off a guy on eBay back in about 2004/5 did you? I had that problem and sold it. It was too hard to try to understand German whilst dogfighting.
